We weren't aware that there was something special in it for us while we were collecting box tops each day for our school until it was announced over the loudspeaker that "Room 37 was the winning homeroom for the Box Top Challenge!"
You should have heard the cheers! It was so exciting! This Friday was the perfect day to celebrate. The weather wasn't too cold, the sun was out, and we were honoring Earth Day.
The kids have two more Free Recesses to look forward to! They won another school contest: Rhyming Synonym on Thursday mornings, and they bought one with the tickets they earned from the jobs they carry out in the classroom.
It's been a great year with these cute faces. Academically, they are ready for 6th grade, although I'd be happy to keep them for another year.

The kids are looking more like 6th graders now; the transition is beginning to happen. It was a lovely week back at school and we kicked it off with getting honest about habits. The kids created an "Academic Success Plan" and created three goals they'd like to work on during the third trimester.
The following day we talked about how they feel at the end of the day; when they leave the classroom and get on the bus, and when they put their head on the pillow at night. We compared those feelings with how they'd like to feel each day and how they related to the goals created.
The kids put the original goals aside and worked at naming the desired feelings they'd like to feel each day. From there, they backed out what they would need to do in order to have those feelings. Needless to say, some of the goals changed.
Some of the desired feelings were: more organized, more energetic, smarter, healthier, & happier.
